Job Summary
The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting research in the laboratory of Dr. Xingguo Zhu in the Georgia Cancer Center. The main area of research interest is gene regulation of sickle cell disease using cell and animal models. The duties include but are not limited to: Participate in project planning and development, conduct experiments, and analyze results; work with small animals, routine daily laboratory work such as maintaining cell and mouse strains.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
GENERAL DUTIES: Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines. Perform a variety of experimental studies including molecular and cellular biology experiments. Experiments may include but not be limited to performing animal works, microinjection, genotyping, western blot, real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and various microscopy and imaging techniques. Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; Summarize and evaluate findings; Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally. Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; Advise principal investigators and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures, and other technological aspects of research activities.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES: In addition to general responsibilities above, the duties include, but not limited to, determining needed new supplies and equipment, making responsible purchasing decisions, placing orders, maintaining computer database and hard copies for inventory (e.g. chemicals, supplies, frozen tissue and protein samples, antibodies, etc.) and equipment service records, keeping laboratory equipment functional, preparation /update of animal use, biosafety, and chemical protocols, and coordinating daily operation and cleanliness of the laboratory. Maintain laboratory record keeping, laboratory supplies inventory.
MEETINGS: Attend lab meetings and discuss results, offer opinions and insight on technical problem solving and future scientific directions.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Prior experience in molecular and cell biology and animal studies using the following techniques: gene cloning, expression and knockdown, RT-PCR and Q-PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, immunoprecipitation, mammalian tissue culture and transfection, cell proliferation and death assays, flow cytometry, maintaining mouse lines and genotyping. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
