Job Summary
The Nanobiotechnology and Molecular Engineering Research Group of Augusta University is looking for a post-doctoral research associate who has the courage to undertake interdisciplinary research. The candidate is expected to contribute to ongoing research projects, writing proposals and advising graduate and undergraduate students in the group. A strong background in Molecular Biology and/or Chemistry is a must. The candidate should be comfortable working with a variety of nanomaterials, their characterization techniques, and assays to test their toxicity. In addition, previous experience with the biological/biomedical applications of Raman Spectroscopy (RS) and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is highly desired.
This is a training position designed to carry out advanced independent research to achieve the objectives of the research project, ensuring consistency with established methodological approaches and models, adherence to project timelines and completeness of documentation. Participate in research data collection and analysis; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; conduct studies of related literature; write and publish articles in scientific journals. A training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific technical and administrative work in support of research efforts in an assigned laboratory or clinical research setting. Participate in research data collection and documentation within relevant guidelines and protocols; develop and evaluate new research techniques and procedures; publish results in scientific journals. Perform a variety of complex chemical, biological, cytologic, microscopic, histologic, surgical, clinical, statistical/computational and dissection procedures.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while insuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.
  • Perform a variety of experimental studies including animal behavior, cell biology and molecular biology experiments. Experiments may include but not be limited to performing animal surgery, microinjection, behavioral testing, genotyping, western blot, real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry and various microscopy and imaging techniques. Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis.
  • Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Present findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigators, other postdocs, students, and research.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
A strong background in Molecular Biology is a must. Previous experience with the biological/biomedical applications of Raman Spectroscopy (RS) and Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is highly desired.

Basic competency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and EndNote or willingness to learn.

Good oral and written communication skills. Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and ability to prioritize tasks.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
